Maya's Response to Alexa

Alexa, I have to agree with you on your opinion on both Amir and Hassan. Hassan is almost like Amir’s guardian angel. When Amir has thoughts of saying that Hassan is merely his servant, not his friend, to Assef, I was incredibly upset with him. Even still, Hassan defended him. I am surprised that Assef did not change his opinion about Hazara right then and there. Hassan showed so much courage while Amir acted cowardly. Much like yourself, Hassan’s story and role throughout the plot always makes the story that much more emotional for me. He has so little yet has an upstanding character. I feel that if Hassan’s mother stuck around to see the person Hassan would be, she would regret her decision of leaving in the first place.

While I do feel sorry for Amir at times, that sympathy goes away when he pranks and teases Hassan. He wants his father to show him love and appreciation but he cannot even be decent to the one person who loves him unconditionally. I feel that maybe Amir’s father has been a witness to how poorly Amir treats Hassan sometimes and that is why he is often cold. He saw his son as mean spirited and that was the last thing he wanted to see. Then again, Amir’s father did essentially say that he was ashamed of his son because he showed no interest in things that he considered “masculine”. I would also like to see how their relationship unfolds.
