In the next section of "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, Baba and Amir's relationship begins to flourish. Baba begins to give Amir the affection he has been so desperately yearning for. Once Hassan and Ali leave, Baba takes a trip with Amir to Jalalabad. Although Hassan and Ali's departure was saddening for me, it did great things for Baba and Amir's relationship. This trip brought Amir and Baba closer together and taught Amir, along with the readers, various lessons about the father who was never truly understood. We learn about his resilience and his tendency to stand up for what he believes is right when he stands up to the bus personnel who refuses to let them pass unless he can have his way with one of the passengers. While everyone else, including the woman in question, is willing to comply, Baba asserts his point of view on the screwed up man even if it seems dangerous. Amir worries for Baba's safety and attempts to discourage him from partaking in the fight. Baba does not back down and ends up surviving and protecting the woman from the advances of this man. This exposes Baba to Amir and to the readers. This situation told me that in reality, Baba has a good heart with the correct intentions unlike the readers had previously seen.
Shortly after this, Amir and Baba find themselves living in some not-so ideal conditions. This infuriates Baba and eventually plants the idea of moving to America. Baba and Amir end up following through with this plan. They move to the states and Baba suddenly becomes well versed in all American relations and politics. He develops opinions of the presidents and of Israel. For me, the commentary on Israel was most intriguing in this part in light of the controversy surrounding this topic in current events. Baba believes that the Arabs complain about Israel when they are not doing a single thing to help the Palestinians. It is funny how this relates to today's news since this novel was written long before the activity with Hamas.
Once Baba and Amir get settled in America, Baba really begins to show Amir his affection. Baba buys Amir a new car. Amir immediately uses this to get away from his every day struggles and stress. Soon after, the topic of college comes up. Baba is at first dissatisfied with the fact that Amir wants to major in creative writing but lets him anyways. This is definitely not what he would have done in previous years. It shows the true progression that these two have experienced.
