I agree strongly with Kaylee’s views on Amir
and Hassan. We both agree that Amir’s harsh actions towards Hassan are awful
but he cannot be blamed for them completely because of the circumstances he was
born into. He lacked a strong foundation from his father, partly due to the
fact that his father probably resents him for his mother’s death. Because of
the he has been raised primarily by a servant who cannot teach him the respect
and discipline a child must learn to be a decent human being. As much as we see
Hassan as a victim thus far in the reading, Amir is very much a victim as well.
I like how Kaylee mentioned the conflict of Nature vs. Nurture because it fits
perfectly in Amir’s situation.
Hassan is also my favorite character because of
his completely genuine inner beauty. His love and admiration for Amir is
present in every word and every action and although Amir recognizes it, I wish
he would learn to appreciate it much more. Had Amir been raised with more
redeeming qualities and love from his father, I do not think he would be
jealous of Hassan. I think he would be able to appreciate Hassan more and be
thankful that Hassan can enjoy some equal privileges he can enjoy despite the
social class he was born into. However, Amir is tainted by the preconceived
idea of social status he has been raised to believe. I am terrified of the next
chapter to come because I think we are all aware it is going to be bad.
