Although
I did not feel the same way after reading this section as Isa, I really admire
her stance on empathizing with Amir. I too wrote how I couldn’t help but feel
sorry for him because the way he is feeling truly does show remorse for what
happened; however, I was very unforgiving at first. I referred to Amir as an
asshole and a coward, whereas Isa saw his actions as a way of self-preservation,
which makes a lot of sense in a traumatic experience like that. I tend to
forget that Amir is only a child as well and sometimes I judge him like a full
grown adult. I can’t imagine how I would react to witnessing such an awful act
and if in the moment I would run out and try to stop it. Sometimes fear does
get the best of people and maybe I judged Amir too quickly.
However,
in some aspects of his character, I believe Amir exhibits disgusting qualities.
Some of his thoughts reveal pure selfishness and lack of compassion for a boy
who would go through hell and back just for his compassion. Although Amir is
just a boy some of the things he thinks and says make me cringe at his very
being. Although he does suffer for what happened to Hassan, he’s truly a mean
boy and I can only empathize with him to a limited extent.
