Alexa Ferrer pg 40-60

I do not know if I hate Amir’s personality or his situation. He has so many unforgiving qualities, however; many of those qualities have to do with the type of social class he grew into and the way he was raised as a child. I know that he is writing this looking back at his life and is just trying to be as honest as possible, but sometimes the things he does and says to Hassan make me cringe. I still blame Baba for his son’s personality and even if he does not realize the impact he has on his son, he should have given him more love growing up. Two of Amir’s worst qualities are his selfishness and his jealousy, both results of lack of attention from his father. It makes me so upset because whatever horrible thing he has done that has not been revealed to us yet could have been completely preventable had he been raised differently.
Hassan, on the other hand, is a beautiful person. I believe there are not very many people as beautiful as him that you will encounter in your life. I only know 3 people like Hassan, and only one is as genuine as he is. Every kind thing Hassan says breaks my heart because he deserves so much more than he will ever be able to achieve in life. The scene where Amir is teasing him about eating dirt shows a lot about Hassan and Amir’s personality. Everything Hassan says is genuine and loving, while Amir knows how cruel he is but cannot seem to stop himself and when he finally does it is a forced attempt. “He was so goddamn pure you always felt like a phony around him.” That line justifies much of what Amir feels towards Hassan, but it also reminded me something terrible would soon happen to him because of Amir’s use of the past tense. Because I have read this book before I have an idea of what made Hassan stop smiling but I cannot remember all the details. I get scared of every page I turn because I know it’s coming and from what I can remember it is an extremely hard scene to read.
We as the audience have gotten our first look at what the title of the book means when Amir describes the importance of Kites in his country. I am still unclear if the importance of the kites has to do with Amir trying to please his father or Hassan being the best kite runner. Considering that Amir was a kite fighter and Hassan was the kite runner, the book is really about him.
