Maya's comment to Ciara

Ciara, I completely agree with your statement that if Amir was the one who had been raped, Hassan would have stepped in during the actual situation and then helped him cope afterwards. Instead, even though his guilt is consuming him, Amir wipes his hands clean of the whole thing. He even snaps at Ali when he asks what happened out of genuine concern for his son, not once trying to incriminate Amir. He knows that Hassan is obviously struggling with simply getting out of bed, but he just waits for his breakfast and his folded clothes as if nothing were to happen. It is one thing to not want to get caught and an entirely different one to not show the slightest bit of concern.

However, I am going to have to disagree with you when you say you cannot “despise” Amir. “Despise” is probably too harsh a word to describe my feelings towards the protagonist, but I no longer find it difficult to say that I dislike him. Yes, you can argue that he is still young and what not. I think, though, that he is at an age where he would have the maturity and emotional intelligence to at least tell someone what happened to Hassan. Hassan was willing to stray from his inherent character and revert to physical violence to help Amir when Assef was harassing him. I do not understand why Amir found it so difficult to do the same for Hassan. He could have earned his father’s affection in that way rather than just winning a game; even if he did not then that says more about the father than it does Amir.
