Maya, I am not sure if I would personally describe Amir’s
issues as being “first world problems”. Many children suffer in unfortunate
situations, but they manage because they have the support of their
parents. No matter what, even if the
world ends, they know they will always have their parents’ unconditional love,
no matter what. Amir never knew his
mother, and his father is ashamed to have him as a son. If your own parents aren’t there to validate
you, who is? To most of us, the idea that our parents’ love us is a given; we
take it for granted. We know that if our
heart is broken, we can always turn to our parents because their love will never leave.
They represent reassurance and clarity.
To Amir, Baba represents everything Amir wants, but cannot have. Amir may have had Hassan to look to for
comfort, but he does not admire and revere Hassan like he does his father;
also, Baba is proud of Hassan in the way that Amir craves, which does not help
their relationship. Amir is scared,
helpless, and alone. He has no one he
can confide in; whereas before, he would confide in Hassan, he truly has no one now. I am not sure how long someone can hold emotions in before they explode. Hassan is in desperate need of an outlet.
