In the next section of The Kite Runner, the "bad" and the "good" guy is clearly drawn. But what is so captivating about this novel is that the complexity of each character doesn't allow for such clear, cut stereotypes. Its fairly obvious that Hassan is tormented by his companion Amir. Often times, coming-of-age novels and films show how the underdog (Hassan) rises above and defeats the bully (Amir). But matters are complicated; Hassan's love and loyalty seem to overshadow any resentment that could form towards the ill treatment he receives from Amir.
Amir's social status is ions above Hassan's in this hierarchical society. I found myself question whether Amirs manipulation of Hassan is as a result of this class difference, or if it is a projection of his own family problems. Baba clearly steers and controls Amir's emotions and self worth through manipulation and rejection. Since Amir is the weak link in his own family, I think that he longs to be "powerful" in the relationship with Hassan. And since sons often admire their fathers, Amir could be imitating his father, begrudgingly trying to be like him. The affection that Baba shows Hassan is interesting, especially the kind operation he pays for.The fact that Amir is too close, too much of a memory of his mother, could be why Baba demosntrates any latent love onto Hassan. I would say he sympathize Hassan's social situation, but from what I have read this character is the farthest thing from sympathetic.
The slighter character of Rahim Khan intrigues me. Always by Baba's side, he rushes to Amir's aid whenever he can. He even encourages Amir's writing and storytelling when Baba predictably turns his back on his son. Though encouraging to read, I wonder if there is anything more to know about Rahim Khan. Often the sweetest of characters can have the worst intentions in the end. Is he simply a noble soul? Or does he have sins to atone for; receiving penance by helping Amir in any way he can?"
Now, the rape scene. It physically disgusted me that a soul as pure as Hassan was sodomized and humiliated. It was painful to read, especially how Hassan chose not to tell Amir. Whether he was scared, or couldn't find the words, it makes it that much more terrible that Hassan had to internalize the horrific act.
