Ryan C's Response to Ciara

Like Ciara, I also think Hosseini’s writing takes the novel to a different level and serves as a perfect complement to the dramatic nature of the plot. I agree with Ciara that Hosseini made language his bitch. The writing style evokes an entire spectrum of emotions from the reader that makes the novel that much more engaging. In most novels there are certain scenes that leave the reader rather bored, these types of episodes in The Kite Runner are held to an absolute minimum. Furthermore, Hosseini does have excellent control over the development of his characters and the reader develops strong opinion towards each character, some of which change over the course of the novel, such as Amir and Baba. At the very beginning, the reader sympathizes with Amir and is rather resentful towards Baba, however, as the story progresses the reader starts to resent Amir and sympathize with Baba. Like Ciara, I recognized that Hassan’s character and the reader’s perception of his character are static throughout the novel. I agree with Ciara that Hassan represented purity and innocence and also served as a benchmark that Amir constantly measured himself up against, frequently thinking if he would do the same for Hassan and vice versa. I also hope to read many more novels as engaging and moving as The Kite Runner and I can appreciate the effort and skill that Hosseini puts into the novel.
