Isa's response to Kaylee's reaction

Kaylee, I completely agree that the relationship between Amir and Hassan immediately draws the reader in. The complicated nature of these two friends is enthralling and frustrating to read. The highs and lows of this relationship is so well-written, but the character actions, particularly those of Amir, are difficult to both understand and accept. I did not like his reaction to the rape, but I pitied and empathized for him because I could see the pain it caused him too. What I hated was how he framed Hassan for the stolen watch and caused their departure. It was heartbreaking to watch Hassan take the blame. It could have been to protect Amir, or to stay within his boundaries of a "servant", but either way, it was a very sad start to what ended up being an incredibly poignant novel.

I also agree that Amir's growth, however slow it was, was very satisfying. While I'm guessing he will never fully accept himself for what occurred between him and Hassan, it is obvious that he has grown into a responsible and more aware man. His interactions with Sohrab must be bitter-sweet. While he is seeing a physical part of Hassan, it must also be a constant remind of what he lost, at his own fault.
