Keri's comparison of The Kite Runner movie and book

I have seen many examples of a movie falling short of the precedent the book version set for it. I am pleased to say that the Kite Runner movie did not fall short. I thought that the movie encompassed the entire plot. There were obviously some parts left out but I did not think it was a huge deal since many of the parts left out were not really central to the storyline. However, it is still important to note the small differences.
One of the bigger parts of the movie that I noticed was that in my opinion, the adult actors did not resemble the child version of themselves. I did not think that the adult Amir looked like the child actor so I found it unrealistic that Assef even recognized him at all when he came to retrieve Sohrab. I also did not think that the adult Assef resembled the younger actor. However, I understand that it is often difficult to cast people of different ages who look alike. Another distinction I noticed about Assef was his age. In the book, Assef is made out to seem like he is close in age to Hassan and Amir. That is at least what I pictured while reading the book. However, in the movie, he looks to be around ten years older than them. I thought that this particular distinction made Assef look even more messed up since it is strange that someone of his age would even bother with these children. I cannot even fathom his reasons for bullying Hassan and Amir.
I also noticed that Soraya's infertility was never mentioned in the movie. This was the only part left out that I thought was necessary. In the book, this was a huge obstacle that Amir and Soraya faced as it would be in reality. It caused both characters a huge amount of emotional strife in the book. I thought it was strange that such an emotionally taxing part of the book was not even touched on in the movie version. While I was reading the book, I also thought of this part as a partial motivator for Amir's decision to retrieve Sohrab. I thought that he did it for Hassan but also because both Amir and Soraya knew that they could not have children and wanted one. The fact that this was left out left me at a loss and a little bit confused.
The last distinction I noticed was that no act of strangling was committed when Amir and Farid went to the adoption agency to get Sohrab. In the book, a huge scene is made in the adoption agency for all the children staying there to see when the strangle happens. I did not think that this omission was huge though. It was a prominent scene in the book but it was not a scene that I felt progressed the storyline in any way.
Overall, I think that the movie version was an accurate representation of the book.
